Learning kana
Hiragana and katakana, and how kana review works.
1 min read
Kana are the Japanese syllables, hiragana and katakana. They are the first thing to learn, and they are the one part of TanoshiGo with no paywall anywhere.
- Core kana
- 92 (46 + 46)
- Counted as ready
- 2 reviews or 5 correct
- Cost
- Free for everyone
- Passing a lesson check that covers it, the first time you clear it.
- Finishing a kana drill in the trainer.
- Collecting it by hand from the kana grid.
Kana progress cannot be disturbed
Kana cards live in their own table, keyed by the character itself rather than by a dictionary id. Dictionary re-imports, word retirements, and level changes cannot touch them.
Guests get the kana trainer in full, with stats kept in the browser. Nothing here is capped or sampled.
